Comparative study of different methods in reducing edema after total knee arthroplasty

Abstract: Objective To compare the effectiveness of multi-layer compression therapy and biological ice pack in alleviating edema after total knee arthroplasty.Methods 100 patients who underwent total knee arthroplasty in our department from January 2020 to January 2022 were selected.They were randomly divided into two groups,50 cases in each group.The observation group was treated with multi-layer compression therapy,while the control group was treated with biological ice pack.The degree of swelling at 1d,2d,3d and 7d after surgery was evaluated,the time of swelling subtraction was recorded,and the pain and comfort at 1d and 3d after surgery were evaluated.Results On postoperative day 1,3,5 and 7,the circumference of lower limb swelling in the control group was (43.51±1.88)cm、(41.97±1.74)cm、(40.60±1.82)cm and (37.93±1.49)cm,respectively.The circumference of lower limb swelling in the observation group was (42.78±1.29)cm,(40.36±1.62)cm,(38.25±1.51)cm and (37.52±1.18)cm,respectively,which were significantly lower than those in the control group P<0.05).Besides,the swelling degree scores were significantly reduced at 1d,2d and 3d (P<0.05)and the swelling regression time was reduced compared to the control group (P<0.05),while the pain scores and comfort scores of observation group were not significantly different at 1d and 3d after operation (P>0.05).Conclusion Multi-layer compression therapy was more effective than ice pack cold compress in alleviating edema after total knee arthroplasty.
